About Tortious Interference

When one party interferes with another's contract rights, this may be considered tortious interference. Tortious interference with contract rights may occur when a party (the defendant) intentionally interferes with a third party's ability to perform under a contract that he or she has with the plaintiff, therefore preventing the plaintiff from receiving the service or goods promised. Another example of tortious interference with contract rights may involve a party (the defendant) that convinces a third party to breach a contract that the third party holds with the plaintiff.

Tortious interference may involve contracts or may be related to business, or both. Tortious interference with business relationships may include any of a number of acts carried out for the purpose of preventing another party (the plaintiff) from successfully establishing business relationships, or maintaining these. In cases of this kind, one party (the defendant) would have performed some act or otherwise convinced a third party to avoid doing business with the plaintiff, when the establishment of that business relationship would have otherwise occurred.
